For data, is there any difference between data disks and general purpose disks?

I bought disks for burning music and it turns out they are data disks and would not work for music. So I am curious why are there 2 types of disks on the market.

Thanks!

I have often wondered the same thing. I use music disk to store data and data disk to burn music. I think the only difference is the marketing.

edit: but I have not had one not work for the other....

It is just a marketing ploy, along with the different colors they use to try.

There's no difference in the discs.

I've used a whole spindle of music CD's for data and never have had a problem, same with using data CD's for music. They're all the same really.

I at one point heard a rumor that the 'music' ones were more expensive because a cut of the profits from 'music' CD's went to the music industry people. Just a rumor though.
