Windows Vista recognized my new Samsung 500 GB SATA HDD and automatically installed the drivers. However, in "My Computer", when I click on it, it says that Vista needs to format the drive. Is this the correct thing to do? I was under the impression that newer HDD didn't need to be formatted.

yeah its a good idea, if there isn't anything on it its not going to hurt anything.
