Error loading os vista

On a system running vista home premium, a friend tried to install system 7 unsucessfully. After that the computer would get "error loading os" upon boot up. I tried a number of fixes suggested on the net and finally ended up reinstalling vista but to no avail. I can start windows by using f8 and manually selecting harddrive partition 0. bios looks set correctly for boot sequence. anyh ideas?

So vista works fine? The problem is that you have to use f8 and select your install?

You may just need to edit your boot.ini file.

Your hard drive is set as the 1st boot device, right?
