"I'd have to say some of the best HD I've seen to date has been on INHD,
with the 2004 Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show. I would never in a
million years watch a dog show before HD, but I found myself riveted to
this program. This is one I've recorded and saved to demo HD to people
who come over. There is one point in this show that almost does appear 3
dimensional, when they have the circular logo spinning in the lower left
hand corner, you could almost swear it was real. This is on a Panasonic
TH-42PD25U plasma, BTW."
This is an ED model right?

I wonder if they had any Dachshunds at that dog show. Never cared for them
that much... too high strung.
I love English Setters. Basset Hounds are way cool, too.
Wasn't there some kind of movie about the people who walk the dogs in
shows?

I still wouldn't. HD or not. Personally I watch *content* not *picture
quality*. That's not to say I don't much prefer the better picture
quality of HDTV, just that it would never bear on -what- I watched.
I swear if this was a books group there'd be people choosing books based
on the typeface, ink, and paper characterics. They tell us how they
read, strike that, they wouldn't "read" them, they'd just flip through
admiring the look and feel of the pages.

some people already will only read a book if it's printed big, and fewer the

In the early early book days, like the early days of HD, they did just
that. The hand made artistically embellished books before the printing
press were probably prized as much or more for the art as for what the
words in them. HD can make a dog look really great and as we say in that
post on AVSForum so can ED.
In fact for emphasis I will state it again IMO most people will say that
a native 42" or less 480P plasma with true 480P content looks better
than 1080i content downconverted to a 42" or less 480P native plasma or
a native 42" or less 720P plasma. And that would cover a high percentage
of all current HD display products.
Most people will pick a 480P plasma at 42" with real 480P content over
any display of 37" or less of any kind with any content. An that again
covers a lot of HD display products

I never watched CSI before reading someone's post about the look of the
'Vegas skyline in the show. By that I mean, sometimes the presentation can
make the content more appealing. After all, isn't that what a good cook
tries to do?

"Best in Show" when it made it over here to the UK. Christopher Guest

Good presentation enhances a good meal but it doesn't cover up a cruddy
one.
A good cook doesn't expect the partakers of his meals to be spellbound
by bland tasteless mush just because he is a whiz at putting perfect
tear drop shaped dollops of the stuff on elegant colour coordinated
place settings.

It was "Best in Show" in North America, too; the original answer post

Well I have experienced HD most recently with a Qualia 004 SXRD1080P
projector and HD is one great reason for having a modulation that can
deliver it, COFDM, and a codec that can handle it, MPEG4 AVC. As the
poster that thinks he is watching HD on his TH-42PD25U plasma, I think
most Americans are being sold pseudo HD with a lot of BS.
Most of the world will have these advantages, we in the US will also
sooner or later, it is just a shame that we are being held up by our
current FCC mandated farce.
The only other possibility is to suggest that the US will be stuck with
these lame standards, 8-VSB and MPEG2, for some ridiculous period of
time. Anything over a year is ridiculous in my book. Even now satellite
is going with more modern modulation and switching to MPEG4. It is only
OTA FREE DTV that is saddled with ancient technology of MPEG2 and 8-VSB.
Doesn't it ever seem strange to you why NO one is paying any attention
to OTA? No manufacturer, no broadcaster, no retailer? What do they know
that you don't? Not so in other countries where OTA is booming.
Don't you ever ask yourself why? Doesn't it ever cross your mind that
you might be being duped, that the powers that be are out to kill OTA
FREE broadcasting? That they are terrified of what is happening in the
UK where Murdock's SKY satellite venture is getting its ass kicked by OTA?
Who are the champions of our FREE OTA? Not broadcasters, they are after
must carry of multicast. (That doesn't sound good for HD BTW) In fact at
the moment there are no champions of OTA accept say Sinclair.

Huh, you mean the same interference-infested COFDM system that's being used
in Australia and Japan?
Or the interference-infested system being used here for XM radio?

That's putting it a bit strongly Bob.
1. Sky have a presence on Freeview DTT as well (they offer 3 FTA OTA
channels on that platform - most recently they showed the first episode of
the new season of 24 on one of these to "bark" their satellite offering)
2. Sky Digital is still the leading digital TV platform in the UK - and it
is a Pay TV platform (predominantly)
Sure Freeview may well overtake Sky in total numbers - though many Freeview
boxes are being sold as "second room" digital converters to Sky digital
subscribers. My Freeview box is used this way. I have a single Sky receiver
in my living room - and a Freeview receiver for the bedroom. I didn't wish
to pay an extra £10/month for a mirrored subscription to a second Sky
receiver.
However Sky is likely to be launching its HD service later this year (best
guess is they will launch an HDTV version of their sports channels aimed at
Pubs and other Public locations first, before they launch bigtime in 2006) -
which will be the only HD platform available in the UK.
Additionally Sky is now offering a "FreeSat" system - where you can get a
Sky receiver and a FTV card, complete with installation, for approx £150 (no
subscription required, the card decrypts the FTV channels who remain
encrypted for rights reasons. ITV1/C4/Five - the BBC are fully FTA on
satellite) - which may also increase the number of FTV DSat households.
(This remains in Skys interest as "Freesat" viewers using this deal can
subscribe to Sky by making a phonecall, and won't require further
installation)
I agree that Freeview has been a real success in the UK - after the abject
failure of On/ITVDigital. However I think "ass kicking" is over-egging
things a bit.
Sky is still a remarkably successful broadcasting operation - and has
assisted Britain in becoming one of the countries with the highest digital
TV penetration (SD only I agree), and one of the key innovators of
Interactive TV. (Whilst it is a novelty in other countries - "Pressing the
Red Button" - which is the universal iTV access system - has become a real
mainstream activity in the UK)

Yep - in the UK we are lucky that historically OTA analogue is the most
popular way of receiving TV. Cable never really took off because OTA picture
quality on analogue is usually pretty good. Hence OTA digitial is a logical
upgrade proposition to OTA analogue-only households - the extra channels are
a nice bonus.
