Ok, I have this problem but no Norton involved. Desktop just loads and nothing can be accessed.
This happens every morning when I boot up and I have to go into safe mode bootup and do a system restore back to 2 days ago as it will not give me a restore point more recent.
So it works fine in safe mode then? Check the event viewer to see if there's some sort of error. Did you install anything after the restore that's being erased?
It works fine in safe mode. Icons open etc. I looked at the event log. I am no expert but only thing that jumped out at me was there was an error after I shut down each night while it tried to install some windows update.
However, I disabled the updates feature completely last night and did a complete shutdown like I normally would at the end of the night. Then rebooted it a few minutes later and it booted fine!. Then when I booted it up this morning it locked up again. Once again had to do system restore.

Try doing the restore. Boot into windows. Manually do the windows update, and choose the custom method, but don't install it. You can choose to not be prompted for that update download anymore.

Looking at the event logs, it looks like it was having probs with 2 things but the worse seemed to have been the windows search service as that was getting errors. also warnings were listed for something called EvntAgnt.
PS, I have completely disabled windows updates as of yeaterday and it rebooted fine after that. It should also be noted here that unlike previous days today's event log shows nothing for the windows updates (most likely because it was disabled?)
