A friend of mine gave me a DELL 1501 w/XP SP3 . After XP loads up, it
crashes (BSOD). It gives some error codes as follows: STOP: 0x0000008E
(0xC0000005, 0xEE6D721D, 0xEB1827E8, 0x00000000). I used a LINUX OS
disc to retrieve all pics, docs, ect. I ran chkdsk, but it doesn't complete, giving me more errors. I also ran DELL's own HDD check program. It says that the HDD is okay. Since XP won't stay on for more than a minute or two, I can't try to troubleshoot any further. Does anyone have any ideas or solutions?
Any input would be appreciated.

Can you get into safe mode? If yes, download memtest and test the RAM.

If you have an OS disc, boot into the repair console and run chkdsk /r
