After start I get a black screen that lasts quite long before window loads....when i go through to adminstartive tools...there are dozens of red and yellow dots...can someone help with this?

Do you mean in the event viewer?

Those have to do with your network connections. They won't have any effect on the BIOS screen (black screen before windows splash screen).

Boot into the BIOS, and make sure quick boot is enabled and that your hard drive is the first boot device.

What do you see on the screen when it freezes? Is it always the same spot?

What PSU do you have?

after it runs through the bios at start up it goes to a black screen sits there for approximately a minute then ...the white lines at the bottom run through and window loads and works fine. can you refresh my memory on what psu is thanks

PSU = power supply unit
If you look at the side of the power supply it'll tell you the manufacturer and wattage.

That's a pretty weak PSU.

You may want to try to get your hands on a different PSU. You can swap a different one in and boot to see if your is failing.

What kind of video card do you have? If yes, check near your CPU socket and see if there is a 4 pin plug from the PSU into the motherboard. If yes, you will need to borrow one with that has that plug.

If you know anyone, you could borrow theirs to test, instead of buying one assuming it's the problem. Weak PSUs can cause weird symptoms like this, but it could be something else. I'd hate for you to buy something you don't need.
