Under $300 for a 27" HD set with receiver that works plug and play,
which it would a high percentage of the time using 5th gen, could get
things going for OTA HD.

It looks like the 27" models for under $300 are "standard definition
DTVs", to quote from the referenced article:
In the Direct-View TV category, the RCA brand will include seven
Standard Definition Digital Television (SDTV) models with integrated
ATSC tuners to give consumers an affordable option for viewing digital
television broadcasts. SDTV models in the 27-inch screen size will be
available for suggested retail prices below $300, while 32-inch digital
TV products will start at suggested retail prices under $400.
The seven RCA SDTV models are:
· 32-inch flat-screen 4x3 format 32F654T
· 32-inch 4x3 format 32V434T
· 27-inch flat-screen 4x3 format 27F524T
· 27-inch flat-screen 4x3 format 27F634T
· 27-inch flat-screen 4x3 format 27F534T
· 27-inch 4x3 format 27V514T
· 27-inch 4x3 format 27V414T
....
It's good to see Thompson embracing ATSC (digital) tuners in their SD
models. I'm curious what the max ATSC resolution is for the 27" sets.
I'm also curious if they downcovert HD signal to the sets native format
(my understanding is all ATSC compliant tuners are suppose to be able
to accept all 18 formats and convert to the sets native format).

Thomson is the company that is using the "Casper" chip by Lynx
Electronic. I wrote them two e-mails, using addresses from the article,
asking when they would sell a stand alone OTA receiver using the better
chip. I hope they put Casper in all their products.

First--as others have pointed out--this is an SD set with an HD ATSC
receiver that down-converts to 480i for display.
Second, it's absolutely amazing that Bob is so stupid as to realize he
has now proven his lie that ATSC tuners add US$300 to the price of a TV.
The *same* 27" RCA TV with only an NTSC tuner costs US$300 at retail:

Yes, they *have* to do that, otherwise they would be basically useless.

First hope that the Casper chip works well enough. Linx didn't show up
for an invitation twice to show how their receiver worked in NYC. They
may have done something under non-disclosure that I don't know of.
LG DID show up and did NOT ask for non-disclosure. A good sign that
their receiver would work which it did.
The only chip that I know works is LG's at this time.

GOOD!
I very much like that idea.
Some folks feel they've been personally insulted in the worst possible way
when it's suggested HD is nice and pretty, but fails to make some folks
immediately defecate on themselves in Biblical wonder upon seeing it. The
most common response is either accusations of blindness, stupidity, or
trolling.
I would get a good chuckle if stations found a way to charge folks to watch
HDTV, such as Italy charging a tax on each antenna on one's house, although
that's been going on since long before HD came about.
Hey, if HDTV is That damn great, then certainly folks wouldn't mind actually
paying to receive it, eh?
(Yes, I do in fact pay to receive HDTV through Dish Network)

The 27" RCA models we are familiar with, designed in the USA and built in
Mexico, are being phased out, now that RCA was sold to a Chinese company.
27" and smaller CRT sets will be produced in China.

That's dissapointing, I'd think 480p wouldn't raise the price that much and
would provide a better picture than interlace. ;-(

Coinciding with Bob, who adds *nothing* to the content of this newsgroup.

China is the world's largest manufacturer of TV sets. Is there a brand
that you know of that does NOT make TV sets or have TV sets made for
them in China?
TCL/Thomson will make parts in China and assemble them in Mexico, the
US, Poland, Thailand, Vietnam etc.
How can you tell where a TV set is "coming" from these days? Who makes junk?
It was not so long ago (for me) that the phrase "Made in Japan" was
synonymous with JUNK.

Most RCA rear-projection sets that I have seen are what I would
consider bottom of the barrel. Picture quality wise, build quality
wise, I gave one of their sets a shot about a year and.... well, you
get what you pay for. I've also heard from service techs that
Thompson/RCA sets are difficult to get parts for and when they can be
maintenced the cost is often so high (for parts) that it often makes
more sense to buy a new set. The same is apparently not true for a
number of other "quality" brands, including: Sony, Mitsubishi, Hitachi,
etc...
That being, I understand RCA, Millips Maganox, etc.. have their place
in the consumer electronics industry just as Daewoo and Hyundai in the
auto industry. Nothing against these manufacters, it's just only fair
that customers know.

Without detailed specs, my 480i is just a guess, because they call the
sets "SD". These sets could handle 480p, though, and they just aren't
using the CE manufacturer made-up term "ED".

Damn Bob! You FINALLY said something that is the truth, how could that
happen? BTW: I'm sure you will be interested to know there are folks on AVS
who have no idea who you are, hard to believe!
