My friend has a PCI firewire card. It has a small 4 pin connector to give it power. Is this needed only if the attached devices draw power through Firewire?

He has a hard drive and a DV Camera attached to it, both of which have their own power supplies. I want to remove the 4 pin connector, because it's taking up one of the molex connectors (via an adapter) and we need a spare molex.

put a y connector in it. most likely its ok to loose that plug, but if you get all the ports wanting power at once, you will exceed the limits of PCI buss.

Can you clarify what you mean by "y connector"?

Also, if I took out the plug, and the two ports needed more power than the PCI bus could supply, would that be really bad (i.e. fry the hard drive, etc) ?

Thanks.
