I just got an AMD Athlon X2 3600+ (65nm), and after installing it, its temperature goes up to well over 70 degrees Celsius, which is... very bad. When I put back my old 3800+, though, the temperature's a stable 45 degrees Celsius or so, which means there's something about the 3600+.

So,

1. Is there something wrong with the 3600+?

2. Do I need to update my BIOS to use it?

Thanks.

if its an older mobo yes u need a bios update and the fan that came with it is fine u dont need arctic whatever it is

Mmm...

1. No, I didn't miss the plastic covering

2. I am using Arctic Silver 5 (and I know how to apply it)

3. I don't think the motherboard is that old, but I'll see if newer BIOS are available for it.

Is your CPU voltage set to AUTO? The Brisbane cores take less voltage than others.

If you touched the heat sink and it wasn't warm to the touch, the CPU and HSF were not making good contact. I don't think it's the CPU, more something wrong with your assembly. Also, are you using the same HSF that came with the 3800?

Edit: typo's

A good question would be what motherboard are you currently using? Some motherboards are not very good at reading the cpu temp of the brisbanes for some reason and some programs like core temp will often give temps below that of the ambient air in the room of the pc which on a regular air cooled system is obviously impossible. I remember one person on here bought one and used it in his 6100 t-force board and got weird temps where as another person was using the t-force 550 and had no problems at all with the sensors on his motherboard. I would give the names out to you so you could ask them but to the best of my knowledge they are both one of the group of members that have been recently banned for recruiting for another site so it would not do ya much good.

*Edit: It seems I found out where the people I mentioned went. They are over at xcpu[b/]s.com. Look up logainofhades. He is the one that I learned from on how to overclock the brisbane 3600+. Also be sure to put him as a referral if ya join. He is the one that I think opened people's eyes to the X2 3600+'s overclocking potential and deserves the credit for it.

Thanks for the replies.

The heatsink is warmish to the touch.

Hmm.. I haven't checked the CPU voltage. I assumed the motherboard knew to handle that. I'll check that out.

I doubt I assembled the CPU + HSF incorrectly -- I did the exact same thing to my 3800+ and got the right temperatures. I tried two different HSFs with the 3600+ as well with the same results, so I'm still assuming the problem lies with the CPU (or has something to do with it).

I'm using an Abit NF-M2 nView, and thanks for the info.

I'll try speedfan now.

I have the exact same board and processor and it reports something like 60 degrees under load. I even upgraded to the newer bios (1.3) and it's still reporting the wrong temperatures.

I would say that the cpu IS being sufficiently cooled. If you're not sure, try using a temperature probe or something. It's just something about the Brisbanes and certain motherboards, the NF-M2 being one of them.

I wonder how the AN-M2s are?

Sythro, I just figured it out. BIOS 1.4 fixes it -- you'll have to download it manually and "update from file" using Flashmenu. For some reason, Flashmenu won't automatically download 1.4 -- it only updated to 1.3 for me.

My temperature readings are down to normal now -- averaging around 46-48 degrees Celsius on idle.

Not sure about the AN-M2s... a BIOS update should probably fix those as well.

That is still rather high for an Idle temp.
