ok time to upgrade and ive got the q6600 come july 22. looking for a new mobo, heard the p35's are good but im a complete beginner so send me in the right direction. Im not interested in ddr3, SLI, Raid, OC'ing or watercooling, i know boring me. but i dont care if they are there as long as im not paying a premium for them. If it matters, this is a rough estimate of the build.

q6600
2-3gb ram
8800 320mb, i assume i can connect this to a 32" sharp aquos LCD tv?
74gb raptor
7.1 sound card for output to home theater receiver, need suggestions.
unsure what PS i need.

looking to keep it in the $150 price range, but a few bucks wont break me.

I'm leaning toward Gigabyte, mostly because they have better customer support than Asus.

other people might think differently but my $0.02 is that in your case, its of no importance whatsoever which board you pick for your stuff, you could even get a mATX mobo since you're not doing anything special.

You are just building a computer. You don't need specific parts to fulfill any expectation, so any board at all will be good for you. Any sort of filter would make a difference in your selection of parts though: Silent, fanless, cool, etc.

You need nothing, so pick anything. It'll all work.

The P35's are popular for overclocking - much better than the P965 chips and mostly better than the NF6 chips.

Is overclocking/DDRIII support the only pros for P35...


(don't give me that crap on that it's a "newer, technologically better chipset" ) :lol: than P965s....I mean, seriously, i don't think many P35 boards can come close to the Asus P5B Deluxe P965...

I'm in the same boat.

I am going to get the Q6600 for my new gaming rig, but I don't know which Gigabyte motherboard to get - P35 I guess, but the one that supports DDR3? (that way I am prepared for the time when DDR3 timings get better).

Right now DDR3 is much more expensive than DDR2 and there's no real performance improvement. A year from now DDR3 will be faster, it will have better latencies, and it will cost about half of what it costs now. I'd stick with DDR2 for now.

I think this is not the best time, or even the better time to jump on to the P35 with DDR3 memory, well its okay for those P35's supporting DDR2..
Mobo choice? i'll still go P965... P35? Not yet till 2008, as well as DDR3 also..

Me too! I looked at Gigabyte's P35 board on newegg and am concerned about its DDR2 requirements. On Gigabyte's site, there are not that many PC8500 chips that are certified. What is really odd, is that the Kingston chips supported are the PC9600 versions. Corsair has a few PC8500 that are supported.

All of the supported DDR2 chips are expensive, which for me, means that I am going to wait for DDR3 PC1333 modules to become more available and drop in price. So, I kinda figured why get a P35 board unless I am going to go with DDR3 memory and a Penryn CPU?

I also may as well wait and see what the Q6700 chip will be. Will it be a Penryn? What will its price be?

Then there is another major question. When will DX10 video cards and games become available? When will DX10 games be available? And what will we see when THG tests them with and without P35 mobos?

There are too many uncertainties to decide anything until the day you decide to build a new computer.

Get either one of the cheapest P35 board or a one of the better P965 boards for around the same price, I'd say. The Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3R is around your price point, I believe. The P965 Asus P5B-E is probably close, too. I am considering the Gigabyte.

p35-ds3r is where its at and at 130-140 its now almost as cheap as the 965 ds3... if you are planning on keeping this system for a long long time (4-5 years) and u don't want to upgrade often then you could look at p35c-ds3r in case ddr3 comes down in price and shows a big performance gain in the next few years, although there are only 2 slots for it... anyway im going to go with thhe p35-ds3r in a couple of weeks it looks to be the logical step for someone who was about to get the 965-ds3.

Q6700 - US$530. Just like QX6700, but locked multiplier. Not Penryn. Penryn will show up around Christmas.

DX10 cards: you may have heard of the 8800 GTS, 8800 GTX, HD2900XT. Video cards with DX10 support have been here for more than half a year. DX10 games are still under development, so are DX10 drivers, so is Vista SP1 (you will need Vista to pay DX10 games, and I'd wait for Vista SP1 before leaving XP). Patience...

If you plan on running everything on a 74gb raptor, you may want to consider buying a storage drive with more capacity or atleast a 150gb raptor.

Vista takes like 5 - 20gigs by itself. And each game is like 5gigs.

in sticking with xp pro, and ive had the same computer for 3 years and have only amassed 30 gigs, as i tend to backup/move most files to external harddrives and uninstall things i stop using/playing. and if it does become a problem, $50 for 250gb hd is nothing.

I just built the system in my sig last week. I was a little worried about using a P35 board this early in it's life. Everything went together without a hitch. I only had to set the ram timing to 4-4-4-12 in the bios. I havn't had a chance to test the overclock on this board, but I have high hopes.

Also, the audio on this board is suprisingly good.
