I'm in a apt building and want to connect 2 computers to my dsl connection, but I just plug into the phone jack, no modem in the house, can I use a switch?, my Lynksys won't allow me to access the internet thru it and switching the cable is a pain

If you want to use two computers on a switch at the same time, then you're going to need two static ip's assigned to the machines or only one can be on at a time. I recommend getting a router, then you can use whatever ip your ISP assigns you and split it two your two PC's through NAT.

If your wall cable goes straight to another router, you'll need a cross-over cable in order for the two devices to communicate. Ask whoever manages that stuff what your cable goes to.

 

Try this: With one computer plugged into the switch (if you get an internet connection) type ipconfig /all. See what your IP is.

 

If it's like 192.168.1.27 - start pinging other addresses like 192.168.1.x and just change x to go up or down. If you ping one that doesn't get a response, set that as your static IP on your other PC (along with the DNS etc. that your other PC is using). That should, if your apt. is using a router, allow you to get a connection on both machines.

We need to know a little more to be able to assist you with your endeavor.

How does your ISP provide you with your IP Address (Static or DHCP)?

You must have a cable modem for DSL to work. So it would connect to a PC for internet connectivity. Connection to the internet for your PC would have been a function of the ISP's installer. Now if you want to allow several PC's to connect to the internet you need to provide a network backbone (AKA router). This has to be set up according to the instructions provided by the manufacturer for access to the internet. Also, you need to configure your PC's to allow them to be networked through the router. This requires setting them up with a common network work group.

Once all these things are configured properly will you be able to access the internet with both PC's.

IF you need additional information on how to perform these tasks please, search the web for "setting up a home network". This will provide you with more in depth instructions.

No, you have to have a DSL MODEM for DSL to work and a Cable Modem for cable internet to work.

Thanks for the input, but as I said, I'm in an apt building and I do not have a modem, so that means the building has the modem and probably the router to hand IP's to everyone, and I am static, thats why I thought if I could use a switch, the first few times I switched the cable from one computer to another it had a hard time recognizing the change, now there's no problem, so I was thinking the switch would be the fix, it's not that I have no idea about setting the network up, had 10 computers at home on cable with a router and a switch( 6 daughters + boy friends and the wife and I), but this is China so things I get to learn,and I know that you you need a twisted pair to connect 2 computers together, and utp for everything alse plugged in a router or a switch, next month I get a dedicated line and have the modem here in the apt then I'll have no problem Thanks again for the help and ideas

Are you saying you have 1 Static IP Address? If so, the only solution would be to get a router and assign the Static IP address to it.

Do as what grumpy says

What ever settings your apt gave you put them into a linksys or dlink router. Run from command prompt ipconfig /all and wrtie down all those settings. From their use the linksys as a DHCP server to issue IP's to your home PC's.

How about using Internet Connection Sharing if you are under winxp? Might work in the interim before you get a router?
