Device not ready door might be open

I been trying to download a sd card with a card reader that I check out on another computer but when I try it on mine all a get is a error message ................Device not ready check that the door is closed... device\harddisk1\dr09 and sometime the dr is followed by different numbers.....About ready to smash my computer I upgrading my photo program check for updates on XP , my drivers, and any other updates ..and nothing has worked yet..........Maybe a sledge hammer will work?
