Vista laptop lid beeps when opening and closing

hi, when i open lid on compaq laptop in vista i get a bleep and also when i close it. is there a setting to turn this off or is it because there is a problem with the laptop ?

It's probably just the laptop warning you that it's going into sleep mode.
