hey i have a dell dimension e520, and for some reason my dvd drive has magicly stopped working it will recognize that the dvd is in there but it wont play it! i found this out trying to play cod4 and ive also tried several movies and other games, none of them worked, ive uninstalled and reinstalled the software, ive gone into the device manager and havent been able to find anything wrong there but idk im very good at this stuff please help!!!

It could be a bad disc or a bad drive. The easiest test is to try a different disc. Look at the back of the disc to make sure there are no scratches or smudges.

If a different good disc doesn't work, it's likely the drive.

What does it do if you double click on the drive with COD4 in? error? nothing?

Try both a DVD and a CD and see if either work.

when i click on cod4 i get a message that says "Please insert the correct DVD-ROM, select OK and restart application" and when i click on the a dvd it opens up vlc. and CDs work

Is it the game DVD or a movie that's opening in VLC? ^ That message makes it sound like it's reading your disc but you don't have the correct disc.

yes cod4 is a dvd, and u need the disc to play the single player campaign, no vlc does not open when i try to play cod4, vlc opens when i put a movie in my comp but the movie wont play

Was there another disc that came with COD4? I haven't played that one, so I'm not sure. I know C&C tiberian sun comes with a disc for each faction and you need the right disc depending on the faction you are playing.

What does VLC do when it opens up to play the movie?

yes there is only one disc, u dont need it to play multiplayer, but u need the disc for single player, when i click on the movie vlc opens but it doesnt start the movie or come up wit a black screen or anything it opens like it would if u just opened vlc with out a disc in

Try opening VLC and browsing to your movie and try playing it that way.

^ if that doesn't work, you may have a broken laser on the drive. You could try a different drive in that PC to be sure.

k i tried openin the vid from vlc and i was able to get the title screen up and able to click and episode and "play" it but it just stopped like it was a pic (im usin a season of MASH to try dis stuff) ive tried openin the episode directly and it didnt work.... so does that mean the laser is broken?
