I have seen lots of discussion on this item, including disabling it in MSConfig. What I would like to know is this: Why does XP add Dumprep as a Startup entry? What is its purpose? I had one user who had it on his Startup without knowing what the problem was (or asking me what was going on). So, for 2 weeks, he had Dumprep running and he let it run, having to wait as long as 45 minutes before the PC starting running at normal speeds. His PC had error reporting turned off. Was it trying to send the same file to Microsoft over and over again? What was it doing? Why did it get added to a Startup entry to begin with and why doesn't it automatically get deleted when its purpose is done?
I just want to know why. Does anyone out there know?
I disabled the entry in MSConfig and everything went back to normal. Me, personally, I have never seen Dumprep added as a Startup entry before. I have seen it running, sometimes multiple times, in the background and had to end those tasks. But they were one time things, usually, and there was never any Startup entry out there. Can any M$ gurus out there explain this? TIA
