Memory recommendations for Gigabyte P965 ?

My first gaming rig is going to have the E6600 , 8800 GTS 640k, wd raptor 150.

I don't plan to overclock or run SLI.

Do I have to stick to Gigabyte's recommended memory list? If not, what other memory besides Corsair or Crucial is recommended? Or should I just stick with 1 of these? Seems like you can't really lose with either one.

Also - does this board support CAS 3 ? I saw somewhere someone say for gaming you want CAS 3 but that's expensive stuff.

Could that be just a marketing gimmick, where only corsair and crucial is recommended?

I use mushkin ddr800 esoteria 1gb x 2.
I got it cheap from newegg for $60. The $30 coupon has expired now though.
