Forum Windows Vista : General Discussion Is it worth it to get vista ultimate?

Does the type of vista I get matter? My uncle is sending me a 64 bit vista basic for free should I spend the extra money to get a better version of vista?

Basic is wrothless, you might as well stick with XP. Also you need to make sure your PC can even hang with Vista64.

What specifically is the difference? Also its for a new build not my current computer.

Basic still has DX10, which may be all you really need since we all like those nice little DX10 effects we can't get in XP. Some new games only run in DX10 now (o.k. well 1 but that number will soon grow). Aero is nice, but if you don't care about it there's not too much reason to get Home Premium. Still I say you may as well get home Premium, just because Aero is nifty and it comes with semi useful things like movie maker and what not.

The only useful thing Ultimate really has is providing back up features and the ability to join a domain like the Business Version, so it's like Buisness + Home Premium version. If that's important to you just get the business version, as the business version still has Aero and even that silly windows movie maker.

Here is a somewhat useful comparison chart

and some of the "extras" that come with Ultimate

Home Premium and Ultimate have media center features, if you care for them.

I suggest home premium. Ultimate has some useless junk, I wish I had never bought it myself. But if you don't use your PC for an HTPC use VLC for videos, and stick with the basic version. Also with the 64 bit version you can run over 4GB of RAM.

Im using Vista Home Basic 64 and it works fine for gaming. The only thing that i am really missing with it is the ability to set up remote desktop connection

I would'nt bother. Stay with XP and wait for Windows 7 mate. I've been using the Windows 7 Beta and its really good, better than Vista IMO.

but then you lose the option for dx10, and it will still be many months before 7 comes out. Not to mention that he is getting vista basic 64 for free. You really cant beat that price

Ultimate has Remote Desktop which I use a lot. Should be in every version imo.

Its in every version except basic i believe

Thank you everyone for your opinions. I think I'll just stick with the OS my uncle is sending me and upgrade to windows 7 when it comes out. It really doesn't sound like ultimate has anything I would want except aero and MAYBE remote desktop connection.
