A new unit is $30 and easily replaceable.

Thanks for your advice but I was under the impression that Sonic DVD burner software that came with the computer has disabled this feature. Is the dvd burner (that came with the computer) not good or do I have to just get a new software to do dvd burner?

Not sure what you are asking. Download and install Deepburner free version and try it out.

I installed Deepburner and I still can read or burn a cd. I am getting "drive is busy or empty" Tried deleting and installing drive - no solution. I have deleted MYDVD that came with the computer as it is crashing on me when I tried to use it. I have also open drive and checked wires. Drive opens and shuts and there is a light when I put the cd in (just about three blinks) and it is gone. Any more suggestions. Thks

I think I would replace the DVD drive. Maybe try n external unit if you are not familiar with installation procedure. have you tried other media (DVD blank disks like -R,+R and brand).

Thanks for all of your advice. After taking apart the drive, cleaning the lens I just bought a new one for $50.00 (LIghtscribe) capability and everything works fine now. Thks again
