Hi am looking to upgrade my graphics card I want something that will last a while my current graphics card is a radeon 9600 so its pretty old. The last thing I remember about graphics cards is that the radeon 9800 was the best at that time. Now the numbers are all crazy, I don't wanna spend massive amounts on a card but will spend a bit depending on how low the card will last. Any suggestions people?

thanks

well AGP it's preaty much DEAD
but if your looking just to improve your frame rate a GF 6600GT will do for you it's cheap it's better then the ATi 9800 PRo it has pixel shader 3.0 and it will keep you for a while in the game
i am using the 9800 pro and i still can play almost all games in the 1024-1280 range>>my opinion it will dye in one year the new games require DX10 , pixel3.0 minimum and 4.0 recomended i have 2.0:(( lucky there are just a few games that require 3.0>like splinter cell but i am happy it's just one game
curently i am contemplating a new rig with a GF6100 onboard and i will wait for the ati 2600XT or the next gen of cards in the winter> it has dx 10 and px4.0 >you will need pci express

can I just use a pci-e graphic card in my motherboard? or would i have to buy a new one ? I want it to be able to run dx10 because i think it will last longer...

If you want DX10 you'll need to wait for the HD2600 series to come out, but really it's unlikely that you will get much out of DX10 with that levelof card, so it's not better than the X1950Pro or slightly cheaper options.

Until then the GF7600GT, X1650XT and X1950PRO are the best bets for AGP.

Great post. Way to redeem yourself.

damn it, I'll probably have to buy a new motherboard then because I saw a really good deal on the 8800gts. Do you guys think this card will last a while ?

go for the motherbord and the 8800 gts if you have the money but if your other components sounds like the ati 9600 you should change them 2 because they wil draw the video card wayyyy back
go for a cheap dual core AM4000+ a minimum 1 gb o f ram and a good PSU for the video card i heard it eats a bit.>>but if you have the mony for a gts you should afford something better

it will last my 9800 pro still kicks ass and it's from 4 generations AGO

get a new computer and really thats how to do it for the long run considering the computer you have (seeing your computer specs would be helpful). AGP will die out as the experts say with newer games coming out plus they kinda stopped producing it so when you later wanna upgrade youre graphics card, its really all PCI man as you can see. they say the bandwidth in PCI slots is 4 times faster than AGP slots and im sure thier are many other cooler things. if you get that computer you can upgrade it as well for a long time to come.

my recommended computer specs overview:

cpu: Intel® Core™2 Processor (Extreme, Quad or Duo processor)

motherboard: SLI supported (nForce 600 or 500 Series)

grahics: 8800 series (you could only get one and get another later when you want to upgrade)

memory: 2Ghz

look im a noob, so confirm with the experts the best solution.

PS. the above specs are generalised so if you decide to get a fat computer, you will have to know the component specifications (im sure you will). cyaaaaaaaa

thanks but that loosk quite expensive i thought i could just upgrade my grahics card to a 8800gts or something and just plug it in one of my pci slots..but it looks like a need a whole new setup and im pretty short on cash right now. i really need a cheap option

going from agp to pci-e usually involves bulding a new system from scratch.

if you just want to stick with AGP for now, then dx10 on AGP cards will be limited, and even those wont perform very well for you to be able to enjoy games with dx10.

soo when it comes down to bang for the buck on agp, your better off getting a full on dx9 card like a 7600GT, x1950pro etc.

i didnt know that you had a pci slot. well just get the 8800 GTS or GTX (more expensive but better in long run i feel).
