Upgradeing my nephews CPU from xp 2400.

What are my best options for air cooled?

Is 2800 2.0 gig fastest avil for the socket 462?

Which flavors most OC'able?

Should be cheap but If not must stay under 100.

Are there socket convertors that are an option?

any input would be appreiciated. Thx guys.

The Via chipped mobo isn't very good at OC'ing, but the best overclockers for socket A were the mobile Athlons. I had a Mobile 2500 that I got up to 2.4 gig stable for several months before I turned it down to 2.0. And my buddies 2600 mobile hit 2.5 almost 2.6 before it became unstable.

I used a Athlon 3000 Barton chip which ran up to 2.509 GHZ stable (13 multiplier and 193 FSB). You want look for a chip with a FSB of 333. If you have pc3200 ram it will be very easy to overclock by just raising the FSB. I did hear that the Mobile version overclocks very well as utaka95 stated. Good luck.

just hit ebay, they have a done of procs on there, even the mobile athlon xps are on there. I considered switching out my current xp 2500 for a mobile one just to OC the piss out of it, but then just figured I would be better to save longer and just upgrade the mobo and get a E4300 so I can have a dual core setup.

I saw a socket converter on www.ecs.com.tw/
I can't tell you exactly where it is on the website because the website is currently down.

It's up now checking.

I was looking through the site few years ago while the socket A is still popular. They were selling a couple of them. I also some motherboards from ECS that can use both socket 939 and LGA 775. Here's a review of the motherboard i'm talking about
http://sg.vr-zone.com/?i=2456&s=1

The converter need for socket 939 is called SIMA expansion cards. I will give you an update of more info once i'm finished doing some research on these motherboards.

find a 939 or 754 socket combo for under $100 with an agp slot and you are in business

that may very well be my only choice. Just got him a x850 so gonna stay with the agp for awhile.

I love the XP-M's and still have one that runs at 2.6 24/7, but for the money you are better getting a good combo or even something like this asrock board and this Celeron 420(Celeron based on Core Architecture) for right around your budget. you could also drop a little more on the processor and get this E2140.

x850xt is on there, just down a ways in the gecube section. i don't see why brand would matter, just core. but wait, seems that chart is for the pci express slot  (scratches head). oh well, i don't see why it wouldn't work

Another option would be this MB from MSI which can mount a 939 K8 and uses a AGP slot for the video card.

Motherboard:
http://www.ewiz.com/detail.php?name=MB-K8TN2F2

I just ordered one today to update my AMD XP3000 system and am anxious to see how much performance increases (will use it with an Athlon 64 4000 sandy chip).

sorry, but i think that board is too much to be stuck with 939 and he wont have enough in his budget to get an x2

I think your suggestion is over his $100 limit also. I figured I would give him another option if he was going higher in price. The MSI board combined with a Athlon 64 3800X2 is only $20 more than your suggestion. It would also be a very good performer. If he wanted to stay with a single core (Athlon 64 3800) he could get this down to just about $100. Either way he will not lose. The Intel Duo Core and the Athlon 64 chip will run circles around the best overclocked Athlon XP processor he can find. Have fun. :)

Well I've bid on a few barton 3200's but they're going over the limit of 70 I set for just the cpu. If I go over 70 I think I will go with the MOBO/CPU combo. But I'd rather wait for the next gen and then grab a cheap x2. THX again guys. your input has been lots of help.. :)
