Weird Startup Problem

I've always had a 160 Gig WD Caviar SE in my system, and it's always acted up. Right now, I use it to backup data from my Raptor, but its already re-formatted and corrupted itself several times. I currently have three hard drives in my computer.

Whenever I start up my computer, I get a read disc error, the computer makes that annoying sound when the floppy drive tries to read and then the computer just sits there. After experimentation, the only solution I could find was leaving my windows xp disc in the cd drive, and then clicling F8 for the boot menu. I then select to boot from my cd drive, but then, when it says please push a button to initialize the cd/installation, i dont touch anything. XP then proceeds to boot normally. There are no other problems except this? Weird eh? Any ideas? Any help is appreciated.
