IR vs serial speed?

What's faster, IR hotsync or serial cable? I've got an old laptop I want
to synch with, but I don't wanna buy the serial hotsync cable if it's just
gonna be slower than the IR (which luckily it has).

For an older laptop, theoretically the same. IR has two main speeds, SIR
(slow/standard infrared, 115,200bps (14KB/s) max) and FIR (4Mbps (~400KB/s)
max). However, I know of no Palm device that supports FIR, and older laptops
are unlikely to as well.

Serial ports tend to max out at 115,200bps, too. They can physically be full
duplex (i.e. send and receive at the same time) and IR can't (reflections -
receive is turned off when sending & vice versa), but since generally in
a hotsync one side is sending a lot more data than the other, the difference
will be no more than a few percent.

USB can be quite a bit faster, of course. Someday I gotta see how fast
the network hotsync would be with my Wifi card (Handera 330).
