Browsers Close After Download, Firefox and IE

Everytime I download a file my browser closes, it doesn't matter if it's Firefox or IE it does the same thing. When I boot into safe mode the problem goes away, when I uncheck the "Enable protected mode" box on the security tab of the Internet Options window it works fine. Any suggestions?

btw the computer is my sisters and she lives an hour away so if you ask me for some info or to try something it may take a few days for me to get with the laptop as its her work laptop and she can't be without it.
