my computer is a gateway windows xp home edition
it can't read my modem or play dvd it missing a decoder

For the modem, check in device manager to see if its even reading it. There would be a yellow exclamation point next to it and/or it will show up as unknown device. Try installing the drivers/software again.

XP, by default, doesn't have DVD decorder I believe. You can upgrade windows media player or get a better video playing program. VLC media player will play most formats right out of the box meaning you won't have to install a bunch of video codecs.
