Did you do any virus or spyware removal before the problem.
See http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=892893 for some possible help.
NOTE - Although that specific KB article refers to one specific parasite
and mentions an older version of AdAware, the problem and solution it
discusses are not limited to that case.

Have you tried F8 to get you into safe mode?

If you can look at registry entries, why can't you run MSconfig? Or look at
the Event Viewer under Control panel-admin tools-services? And just so I
understand, the computer is not rebooting, just refreshing the desktop?

Sorry, Event Viewer is under Start-Settings-Control Panel-Admin Tools-Event
Viewer. If you don't have a lot of time, look for a red or yellow symbol
then right click on that line and click properties. Try to read what is
causing the error.

Well, I don't know what it is, but I would have to guess, either a virus of
some kind, or a corrupted Windows file or piece of software causing a
conflict.

Can you run your anti-virus by using it's program disk as a boot disk or did
you make a boot disk for it?

If you can run, type in eventvwr.msc this will open the event viewer.
Expand the system entry and you might see something there. As I mentioned,
look for a red or yellow entry and right click and select properties. Maybe
it will tell you which file is broken so you can replace it.

Can you type msconfig in the run window and turn off some of the Start
Entries? That might prevent so software from starting.

If you can't find a solution and you want to try the System File Checker.
Type cmd in the run window to get a command window. Then type SFC and
enter. You are supposed to get a help screen that explains the entries.
Running this may replace some system files. I do not know how it treats a
system that had been updated with something like SP2, but you might need the
Windows install CD. Hopefully before you do this, one of the Windows folks
will show up with an answer.
