Pc freezing randomly

my pc (HP pavillion 1.5 yrs old) running windows vista keeps freezing. I let the antivirus software lapse for about 6 months. I don't know how to figure out what is wrong with it. I ran f8 during start up and put on avista anti virus. does anyone have any ideas?

Try to check in Task Manager if there's a process that drawing all of your CPU / memory resources.

run it in safe-mode
if it doesn't occur, then its a driver issue

You can try updating the drivers to your system (videocard, soundcard, LAN, ect.)
You should be able to find most of the drivers @ HP's website:
http://welcome.hp.com/country/us/en/support.html
