What are the main differences among these 4 devices. It seems like access points and routers are the same? I orignally thought an access point increased the range of your wireless network but I guess that's what a repeater does? Also, the new media center extenders, do they just act as a bridge between your PC and your TV? They're pretty expensive.

I'm no expert. My understanding is:

AP = provides access to wireless devices, may or may not connect to a modem, has a unique IP
Router = may have AP built-in and connects to a modem
Repeater = extends the signal range further using the same router IP
MCE = do you mean this?
