I'm planning on an overhaul. I would like someone to look over the components i've selected and see if i've made the right decisions. it's been so long since i upgraded that i'm not sure if this MOBO, CPU, and Ram will go together.

-- AMD Athlon 64 X2 4600+ Dual Core Processor Socket AM2 Windsor 2.4GHZ 2X512KB 89W 90NM Retail Box

-- Corsair XMS2 TWIN2X2048-5400C4 2GB 2X1GB PC2-5400 DDR2-667 CL 4-4-4-12 240PIN Dual Channel Memory

-- Gigabyte GA-M61SME-S2 mATX AM2 GF6100 NF405 PCI-E16 2PCI SATA2 RAID Video Sound LAN Mother *IR-$2*

-- Sparkle Power SPI 350W ATX12V 2.0 24/20PINS Power Supply W/ 120MM Ball Bearing Fan

the main thing that worries me is the ram. Is it fast enough to not give any bottleneck? And i think this ram pair is for dualchannel, is my MOBO capable of that?

Thanks.

One of the top sets of ram right nowthat uses the Micron D9 memory chip modules is the G.SKILL 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory - Retail $109.99

Do think your Power supply is a bit small (wattage wise). Would think on going with either these 2 below.

ENERMAX Liberty ELT500AWT ATX12V 500W Power Supply - Retail $109.99
($99.99 after $10.00 Mail-In Rebate).

OCZ GameXStream OCZ600GXSSLI ATX12V 600W Power Supply 100 - 240 V CB/CE/CSA/UL/FCC - Retail $109.99 ($99.99 after $10.00 Mail-In Rebate).

whats your overall budget and what are you going to use it for.

i would suggest going for a 690g Mobo (the MSI is good i have it)

there are some very cheap 6400 ram sticks out there go with them

then by what ever processor you can afford

oh and i got a seasonic 330 and its working fine

IMO, change the PSU. It is the one component that can cause the most damage and can also be the biggest source of all your problems and you won't even know it.

The PSU seems weak for your build, once you factor in spikes and load variance, and overall capacitor decay over time, I would say you are just waiting for problems. I don't think you need to increase the wattage/amps from your current design layout, just go with a more reliable PSU.

Here is a list of good PSUs, and note the models of the units, even though some manufacturers by default are pretty good, sometimes the models they sell are not the same across the board.

With regards to your overall layout I would ask if you could provide just a bit more info for a real accurate recommendation:

Goals for the system, overall usage,
Amount you have to spend,
Any spare parts you have laying around you are going to use,
How long until you can upgrade or will you rebuild,
Lastly, where are you located as it would effects parts and prices (UK VS USA for example)
