slower internet connection when using router

My internet connection is a lot quicker when I connect my PC directly to my cable modem instead of via my SMC Barricade g Wireless Router 2.4GHz.

At the moment I'm not using the wireless network option on the router, just simply hooking the router up with an UTP cable.

The biggest difference in speed is downloading bit torrent files. Without the router I usually have a pretty fixed speed of 20 to 50 kb/s. When using the router it doesn't go above 10 kb/s....

Is it wise to upgrade the firmware of the router??
