I'm helping a friend select parts for his first ever build. The list below is what we have pieced together thus far. Our aim is to try and keep it under $1000.00, but if we go over it shouldn't be that big of a problem. I just want to know if you have any suggestions or recommendation regarding these parts or alternatives. Thanks in advance!

Case: Antec Nine Hundred - $139.99

Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo E6300 - $164.00

Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-965P-DS3 (rev. 1.3) LGA 775 Intel P965 Express ATX Intel Motherboard - $99.99

PSU: OCZ GameXStream OCZ600GXSSLI ATX12V 600W Power Supply - $109.99

Memory: G.SKILL 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Model F2-6400CL5D-2GBNQ - $80.99

Video Card: He already owns a 7600GT which he's going to use.

Sound Card: X-Fi XtremeGamer - $89.99

Hard Drive: 300GB Western Digital Caviar SATA - $79.99

DVD/CD Burner: Samsung 18X DVD±R DVD Burner with LightScribe - $32.99

I would change the processor to an E4300. It is easier to overclock than the E6300 b/c it has a higher multiplier 9x vs 7x and they both have the same amount of cache. Difference is. the E6300 have VT technology which is usually disabled during overclocking to remove stress from the chipset. I'm assuming your overclocking b/c your getting the DS3. Everything else in the build looks fine

We may dabble into OC'ing but he's a new fish to building and I'm a new fish to OC'ing...but it's not out of the question. Initially though, we just want to get him up and running with a good comp. Is there an alternative board we should consider if OC'ing isn't on our plate?

Some quick possible changes. These will probably all make the price go up a little bit, so I apologize for that.

Change the processor to a E4300 or a E6320. The 6320 has the 4MB shared cache rather than just the 2MB. Naturally, it is also more expensive..

I would try to get a MoBo that uses the intel p35 chipset. I think there is one on newegg for ~$130?

Edit: Here is that MoBo. It will still be useful in the future. If you are going to want a new system in just a year or so, then you could probably stay with the one you currently have picked out.

4mb cache is worth it over 2mb.

e6420 is what I reccomend for prossessor.

the 6320 or the 6420, depends how much you want to overclock. Heck, if you aren't OCing at all, go for the E6600
