its in the list under drives, Device Manager says that it's working, it will open and close, but it won't read anything ... I've tried music and data CD's ... forgot to try a DVD ...

Try blowing out the drive with a can of duster. Try cleaning the disc with a couple drops of water and a soft cloth.

Drives pretty much either work or don't. If it doesn't read after ^, then it's probly dead.
