okay, i been looking alot lately at the AGP 4x/8x graphics cards. but i dont know if i should spend money into buying this.
i wanted to know if i should upgrade from a GeForce FX5200 to a XFX 256mb 7600GT.
I have a Dell computer that is 3 years old right now, and i dont plan on buying another computer for a couple years or so. I have the FX5200, 512mb ram, 19" monitor, a 375W psu, p4 3.0ghz, and 120 gb hard drive. I was thinking i would buy the XFX 7600GT and get a new psu that is a APEX 460W psu, for $55 on newegg.com - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817154019

is this a good deal for buying the XFX 7600GT for $150 and the APEX 640W for $55?

here is the video card link. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814150210

last time i checked Apex wernt exactly known for making stable power supplies. but it should be enough for a 7600GT.

However, that card wont last you 2 years. Heck i doubt any current AGP card will. Though the 1950XT or a x1950pro could last you a while longer than a 7600GT

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814161070

however, if u get that card, you will need a better psu make. something liek this one: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817371002

Agreed. Besides, when you can have an X1950GT like this one...

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814102093

for the same price, it makes a 7600GT or X1650XT terrible buys.

lol i was gonna post that link aswell

@OP: keep in mind that the pro version is slightly cooler and less power hungry than the GT version.

well im looking at buying that, but idk, the FX5200 lasted me 3 years, so maybe atleast a year will be good, i just need something for me to game with, for now atleast. but can u find me a good powersupply on newegg? and send me the link when u repost? i want something that is around 500W or lower, but handles the 7600GT, and around $50-$100?
i have the 375W psu now, idk its from dell, but i wanted to know also, if that would handle the 7600GT, or should i just buy the psu anyways? cause sometimes when you dont have enough power to run the graphics card, your internet will lag out and loose connection.

One thing you should consider is that your AGP system won't have much upgradability left in it. The smart idea would probably be to make a new rig or at least a new motherboard, although it doesn't sound like that is an option for you. Still, consider that if you use this temporary solution now you will end up spending more later.

If you have a 375w Dell psu , you won't need to upgrade it for either of the cards you mentioned.

how many amps does it have on the +12V rail???

the recommended supply for a pro is 400-450W with 30Amps on the +12v rails

@OP: if you can afford the pro, go for that, other wise the GT. The pro is a bit faster, a bit less power hungry and a bit cooler. so overall it does better thn the GT. but the GT is no bad card by any means. for your needs it will do just fine.

The Dell 375w psu provides 30 amps on the +12 volt rails, it is used to power the 8800 GTX on the XPS 410.

im really looking forward to doing the X1950GT because of the $30 MIR, which makes it a 116.99, cant beat the price for the card! Delluser1 do you work at dell or something? or you just study computers?

375W DELL Power supply that has 30 Amps on the 12Volt rail.......
Wow, I just can't see that ever happening, especially powering 8800GTX.

I have a Dell computer that is 3 years old right now

Bull Sh*t a 3 year old Dell man, 8800GTX didn't even exist yet, but it might be able to power the 7600GT without an upgrade. I wouldn't bet on it though.

well im going to try putting the X1950GT in it, and see how it goes.
Is there anything else i should be concerned about? like the size of the card, or it will be bottlenecked?

No, I don't work for them, I do own several and have worked on a few.
Your 3 year old Dimension with agp slot has me intrigued, I'm thinking that your psu is only a 305w unit.

I just don't know how to respond, Dell tested it, sells it and it works.

Bull Sh*t a 3 year old Dell man, 8800GTX didn't even exist yet... true, but what has that have to do with the power supplies that were available then?

it might be able to power the 7600GT without an upgrade..... definitely.

I wouldn't bet on it though...... You should, the 305w 22 amp Dell psu in the E5xx series is used to power cards such as the 7950 GT and the X 1950 Pro, even though it wasn't tested for them.

yeah i just did that like 5 minutes ago, it was a 305W, so should i get a better psu like a 450 or 500, and get a 7600GT? or just buy the 7600GT? would this bottleneck or anything too?

Forget about the 7600GT. If you're going to buy a new PSU (which you'd probably need even for a 7600GT), anything less than that X1950GT would be a terrible buy. At the same price, the X1950GT eats a 7600GT alive.
