It started running this on its own. The files were on my portable hard drive. They are now missing so my question is where did they go? They weren't orphaned files, they were the things I didn't want to loose if my computer crashed. All I know is it said "recovering orphaned file into directory file" and then said it was moving the specific file name "into directory file XXXXXX" Where are these directory files they moved to? How do I recover them back to my external hard drive?

It just happened to me today. Chkdsk is actually recovering files you lost after a bad shutdown or a repeated bad shutdown.
