Restoring system recovery files

Hello, I recently restored my computer to manufacturer's settings. In the process of doing this I had to create a back up file. I created it on an external hard drive. However when I went to restore the files, it put a shortcut icon on my desk top to system recovery. All of my old files and programs are there but my computer can't seem to restore them. When restoring from back up files wizzard doesn't seem to work. Any suggestions?

Did you backup the files using Windows Backup and Restore to another HDD? If so, open up that program and click restore my files. It will ask you for the backup location, etc.
