Most AC adapters are generic despite the labelling. Find out what
voltage and current you need, whether AC or DC out and what the plug
configuration is. Odds are you can get one at any one of the larger
electronics suppliers like Mouser, Digikey, etc. or, perhaps, even at
Radio Shack.

Nope.

Quite true.
You need to match the voltage and the polarity exactly, they are critical.
The amperage is not so critical so long as you have more than your machine
specs require.
And, of course, you have to match the tip size also.
Radio Shack makes quality AC adapters in great variety, some with variable
voltage and interchangeable tips.

Forget finding an exact match adapter. What does the connector look
like and what are the voltage requirements?

It's quite possible that an inexpensive "generic" adapter will work.
another option is to connect a DC power supply to what would otherwise
be the battery terminals.

Not in this case. I believe that it uses a mini-din style 4 pin plug.

The best way is to bring the system to a place that sells a lot of
different weird connectors, and find the one that fits. Then find the
pinout, and wire it up to the proper voltage adapter.

Nope. Sorry, but if it doesn't use a simple 2-wire connector, then it's
likely that part of the charging circuitry is in the AC adapter. In
that case an actual OEM adapter probably is required.
