I just changed my highspeed internet provioder over to verizon. however, when i hooked up the modem they sent me it caused my router to change their ip address scheme. the standard I had been using was 192.168.1.x and it had been working fine. However when I hooked up the new modem, it changed it to 10.0.0.x and I can't figure out why. If I go into the router setup and try to put it back, the internet stops working. Any thoughts on why this happened. I don't want to have to go back and redo my firewall permissions on all of my computers to the new ip addresses.
I have two routers and a switch in my network. and the ipaddress changed on BOTH routers. The internet is plugged into a Netgear wireless rangemax router model WPN824. That is then plugged into a netgear switch which runs all of the outlets in the basement. Then from one of the outlets in the basement I have another older netgear wireless router plugged in. I believe the DHCP server is disabled on the router in the basement.
Once you change the IP addressing scheme on the routers, you'll have to either manually configure the IP's on all the PC's to match the new scheme, or a an ipconfig /release & renew on them to get the addresses.
As for why it changed to a 10.0.0.1 scheme, I'm not sure. I'm guessing it could be the new modem having a build in DHCP server and assigning whatever it wanted.
Yea, I know I have to renew the ip address on the computer after I change them but it still wouldn't work right. Perhaps the modem does have a dhcp server. . . just a bit irritating since I wasn't expecting it.
