If I to an online game I freeze up everytime within seconds of joining the
game. On every freeze up there is a punkbuster message displayed. I have
given q3 permission to access the internet. If I turn off the nvidia
firewall all is well and I can connect and play. Do I need to open up a
port for PB, or is it just a problem between q3 and the nvidia firewall?
Or am I just waaay to numb?

What is the punkbuster message.
Have you updated punkbuster lately?

I have updated PB. The message is (at least the last one)...

pb client: ogc_trans="":must be equal to 0 (ok)
:0 current cvar violations
:cvarlist truncated: use pb_cvarlist to see entire
list

i don't think it's the same message each time, although this is the only
one i wrote down. it appears to me that i lock as soon as pb tries to
connect to wherever it connects. firewall off no problem.

Do I have to re-configure my firewall or proxy to use PunkBuster?

In general, if a connection can play the Game online successfully
without PunkBuster, then there will be no need to make any
changes to a firewall or proxy that may be in use when PunkBuster
is Installed and Enabled.
PunkBuster communicates over the Internet (and in LAN
environments) using the same network channels created and used by
the Game, and therefore requires no changes.
If, however, you had to adjust your firewall to use the game in
the first place, you may need to extend that adjustment to
include ports used by PB's auto-update feature.
PunkBuster Clients use outgoing UDP Port 24349 to get security
info from the PunkBuster Master Servers, PunkBuster Servers use
UDP Ports 24349 and 24305. "

thank you very much. this gives me SOMETHING to try. left to my own
devices i did a clean install of q3, redownloaded pr1.32, reran pbweb a
couple of times, and pulled out a large handful of hair.....i have been
doing a bit research on the nvidia firewall and think i might just lose
it and go back to zonealrm...

Zonealarm is the AOL of firewalls. It sux, IMO.
Check out sygate, it's free, and runs very well, very trouble-free.

I guess I should screw around with this one a bit more. I have more
problems than I thought! I am not even sure if it is the nvidia firewall, I
forgot about the one on my dsl modem/router. Things have changed mucho on
my desk since the good ole days of playing q3 for hours every day on a
machine that would barely run it. One thing for sure I WILL FIGURE IT OUT,
maybe this time I should RTFM. :)

thanks for your help and suggestions
