I bought a new hard drive from dell and installed the OS that came with the the computer originally.
It completes: Collecting Information, Dynamic Update, and Preparing for installation. then:
An error has been encountered that prevents Setup from continuing.
One of the components that Windows needs to continue setup could not be installed.
Data error (cyclic redundancy check)

Installation failed: D:\1386\asms.

Any ideas?

check to see if the file u installing might be corrupted.

2 different drives did this, and 2 different OS disks did this. Another search found that others have had this error and it was actually the disk drive. Unable to perform the read. hence the D:\ error. I hope thats it, I just ordered a new drive..

Solved: New Disk Drive corrected the installation error.
