Im going to be giving my parents my 4200x2 cpu to upgrade thier single core 3800 so im looking for a new s939 chip. Newegg has Opteron 165 and 170's i my price range, which of the two is the better OC'r? My goal is to hit 3ghz, is this possible using air cooling? Im running a Dfi Nf4 UltraD and 2x1g Ocz gold ddr500, power supply is a Silverstone Zues 675 and cooling is an Arctic Cooling freezer64 pro. Do you guys hink 3ghz is possible with this setup? I was thinking of upgrading my cooling, whats a nice upgrade over the Freezer64pro? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Im going to be building a quad core system soon so this project is mainly for fun and to see ow far I can take a s939 system.
thanks

There's no guarantee in overclocking speeds~

Most Dualies and dual core Opties should hit 2.5~2.7 with a little added voltage but to say which will hit 3.0GHz is hard to say!

The max. overclock's usually achieved on water or other forms of extreme cooling. This is not to say that air cooling wont achieve 3.0GHz but it's less likely!

I would go with 165 from a C/P point of view.
If both would only hit 2.7GHz, the cheaper 165 will have a higher C/P value~

Thats just my take.....hope it helps......

i'd go with the opteron 170. its got a little bit of a head start which i've heard does and doesnt help. the main reason some people cant get a good overclock is because they have junky memory, but in your case that doesnt seem like a problem. i guess it will stay cool on air cuz thats what ppl are always bragging about when they overclock opterons. i dont think you'll have too much trouble hitting 3ghz. good luck

i have a 165 and as long as your motherboard can OC to over 300Mhz then thats the better choice. But if your motherboard is so so then get the 170. eg my mobo is at 325Mhz right now, thats a lot for these AMD motherboards, so see what u can do before you decide,
