While traveling with my laptop, I want to be able to access my desktop
at home.

BUT we get frequent and unpredictable power failures.

So I want the computer to reboot by itself when power comes back up;
also, no selecting userid (and there is only one) in windows XP.

How can I make this happen? I don't see any obvious settings in the
BIOS.

Could be Spyware trying to hijack you. Download, install, update and run all
of the following.

Ad-Aware
http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/

Spybot search and destroy
http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/

Microsoft Windows AntiSpyware (Beta)
http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/spyware/software/default.mspx

If none of the above fixes the issue then download Hijack this, run it, save
a copy of the log file and cut and paste it back here to the group so that
it can be analyzed.

Keep it on a UPS and it will stay on for whatever length of time
the UPS supports. A bigger UPS will keep it on longer.

Start | Run, type "control userpasswords2" Select the account you
want to logon to automatically. Then uncheck the box "Users must
enter a user name and password to use this computer."

Or do the same thing with TweakUI.

Look for power options .........

Check the manual that came with your motherboard - (Or download one)

you might be able to enable power on when the modem gets a call this is
a common complaint form people that have it turned on accindetly. A
decen tsize UPS will also be handy.

A better place to post would eb the computer or motherboard mfg
