if i go with the gts am i really going to notice that much of a difference? the gts is 75 bucks more.

Get the 8600GT XXX
620 / 1600 mhz

I think the gt is pretty much gts with lower clocks so yeh but a slightly overclcoked version then... overclcok some more!

the last sub 150 card i bought was the 6200. the bottom of the line for the 6000 series. i just don't want to make that same mistake again.

i know that the 8600 has the 8500 and 8400. so a couple levels below it, and the 6200 i think if anything had the 6100 below that. so does levels matter? i'm not sure if it is justified or if i'm paying sub 150 i'll i get that same performance out of any other sub 150 card? (so the 8600gt's performance today is the same performance i'll see with the 6200 back in the day).

i don't have a huge budget but i'm not even sure its worth spending sub 150 on a card that i wouldn't get a significant increase from.

Don't get a 8600gt card even if it has directx 10 support it will be at least 2 years before directx 10 will start showing it's power and the hardware will start coping with it i saw an 8800ultra wich in lost planet dx10 demo scored about 15 fps and it cost's 800$ so you can imagine what an 150$ part will score. I would recomend getting an x1950pro or an 1950xt those cards can eat any directx9 game for breakfast and the x1950pro cost's about the same as the 8600gt and the x1950xt cost's a little more but it's worth the price diferrence.

does memory interface make that much of a difference to performance? i don't read reviews so don't send me any links to them. i'm all about statistics because my friend used to work for pcgamer and said they were purchased reviews on what they did.

Well the x1950pro will beat the 8600gt in any game and if you have a big monitor the 256bit memory will make a huge diference but the x1950pro is the best choiche for you at the same amount of money you could play oblivion on high setting fear and any game on the market but if you are going the buy the x1950pro make shure you don't buy the saphire one nuy the his with iceq cooling.

I to am thinking of a 8600GT card.

I have an ATI x850XT 512, I am thinking about a nVidia 8600GT because I want to go to Vista and try some of the DX10 games.

Both are about the same price, the Fatal1ty seems to have a higher factory overclock and memory. I like the heatpipe cooler on the Fatal1ty 8600GT, so that is my preference for the cards.

How much faster are these 8600GT over my ATI x850XT?

Anyone got either of these cards, any opinions?

Just buy an x1950pro or a geforce 7900gs and you will be very happy those 2 are pretty fast compared to your x850.
