We have a Sony KDF-60XS955 HDTV and two DVD players. One is a Panasonic E80
DVR, with a hard drive, that we use daily to time-shift programs. The other
is a Panasonic DVD-S97 upconverting DVD player, that will turn 480i DVD
signals and turn them into 720p or 1080i and send them via HDMI to your TV
set.
When we first got the TV set, I change the setting on my E80 to 16:9 / 480p,
since the TV would take a progressive signal from the DVD player. But after
reading a discussion about it here, I experimented and found that my TV
produced a noticeably better picture from the E80 when I set it to send 16:9
/480i. I let the TV set do its own conversion to the way it finally
displays everything -- at 788p. So, the TV set's circuitry that's designed
to improve 480i signals did a better job of converting to progressive than
it could do when it had to start with a progressive signal from the DVD.
On the other hand, the DVD-S97 produces an incredible picture when I set it
to convert the DVD 480i picture to 720p and send that to the TV as 16:9 /
720p. I have tried sending the picture to the TV as 1080i but that doesn't
work quite as well.
Just goes to show how, with DVD players, TV sets and other equipment all
working on the TV signals, perhaps not to each other's benefit, you have to
experiment around to find which settings work best.
