I have lost the ability to do basic searches on the net. I also cannot access Google. Favorites are ok. Specific URL's are ok. Just no word searches.

Try flushing your DNS resolver cache

Click Start > Run and type or copy / paste <b>bolded</b> below:

<b>ipconfig /flushdns</b>

Hit enter.

Now can you access search engines?
