Hey. I was thinking about buying a big-screen TV (probably rear-
projection), and I wanted some advice. I'd prefer to get a big-ass 4:3
model, since it better suits my purposes (video games, television, etc.),
and the widescreen area should still be more than adequate. I know they
don't make many these days, so there must be some good deals on new old-
stock models, right? Could you tell me what the best model is, and where I
could get it?

My priorities are, in order: Value, Size, and Quality. Also, I'd like
something with a lot of flexibility (zoom options, etc.), a good line
doubler, and a decent variety of inputs.

Thanks in advance. Later.

I doubt you'll find an HDTV that's RP and 4:3.

BTW, Many video games ARE 16:9, nearly every DVD is widescreen, and
nearly every prime time network show is in HD at 16:9. I think you
need to do more research.

I knew I'd get a reply like this. But I'm not uninformed. I actually know
my needs.

I don't watch network TV any more, besides some Fox on Sundays (mostly
cartoons). I watch mostly anime these days. Arrested Development is the
only show I'd be able to watch in HD. In fact, I HAD an HD Tuner, and that
was the only show I watched. I pretty much hate modern movies (and old
movies are actually 4:3, right?). And most of my videogames (esp. the older
stuff, which I still enjoy) are 4:3 only.

It's not that I'm ANTI-widescreen, or anything. It's just that most of the
content I like is still 4:3, so it suits my purposes better. Otherwise, I'd
usually be letterboxing and very rarely use the full potential of my set.
Besides, I'll get a big enough 4:3 TV that the widescreen area will still
be very large.

No 4:3 television is a good "value" at the present time.
All prime time TV is going to 16:9 format.
Most video games are coming out in 16:9 format.
Get a 16:9 set.

If you get LCD and DLP, you needn't worry about the aspect ratio of your
content since there are no burn-in problems with either technology. You
never have to zoom/stretch if you prefer OAR. RP-CRT has arguably the best
picture for the value but can suffer from burn-in and require periodic
tune-up/calibration.
YMMV
