Dell desktop dvd drive not seen

I have a Dell Optiplex 760 with a DVD RW/ CD running XP

Windows does not see the DVD drive although it saw it a few weeks ago

BIOS knows about the drive.

The drive tests fine on other machines.

They want to reload my OS to fix it :-( which means that all the rest of the code I have on the system will be trashed and I will need to reload it all again.

Is there an easier fix ?

This is what you do...

Start the Run Command Prompt

Type in "regedit" without the parrenthesis then click ok

Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE

Then SYSTEM

Then CURRENT CONTROL SET

Then CONTROL

Then CLASS

Then find {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

The whole thing looks like this:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

Then delete the upper and lower filters....

BE VERY CAREFUL YOU DELETE THE RIGHT FILTERS.

RESTART YOUR COMPUTER THEN THERE YA GO!!!! HOPE THIS HELPS

First You should check the device manager to see if there is a conflict on the device. You may simply need the drivers for it.

Does it show up in the top or bottom window of disk management?

Tried this...it finally took me to MSN and their 'wizard'

Still didn't fix it as the wizard still had problems

I appreciate the response...tried it, but no luck. No filters ( that I could find ) were present.

You don't want to use any kind of wizard to tell you what drivers you need. Find out the manufacturer of the drive, go to their website, search for your model, download their drivers.

Truer words were never spoken. I don't like to use Microsoft for other devices either.

The problem is that it is a work machine...we have some different drives on our systems and they don't want us messing with the machines any more than we have to.\

I didn't want them to reload my system...because I will need to reinstall all my additional stuff ( compilers, etc ), so if I could fix it real fast, all was good. They are coming by to reload it today
