Open With Problem

Lately a problem has randomly come up and is bugging the hell out of me.
Whenever I try to open a program, whether from the Desktop, start menu, or file, the "open with" window comes up and then I have to find the source exe file for the program to be able to use it. For some programs it wont give me the option to find the source program like steam. The only program that is working where i dont have to find the base program is Quicktime.
Is this a virus my scanners have missed or is this a base problem and if so how do i fix it?

The problem is that something meddled with teh default action for classes.
If it happends with all, perhaps the * entry in classes root (registry) is broken.
Otherwise perhaps the .exe entry or something similar is.
I've only seen this once before, and that was caused by a virus. I don't recall how I solved it. The way I look at it right now, you can either try importing the relevant classes root parts from another system, or try a repair using the windows dvd.

Edit: You ofcourse could also take a manual look at the classes root entries for the relevant file types.
