Hello, been searching and have already tried a few guides as well as run the windows xp setup wizard which did not work.
I am trying to set up a home network with two windows xp pro computers. one is a wired desktop and the other is a wireless asus f3j notebook. I am using an linksys wrt54g wireless router. both are connected to the internet.
I ran the setup wizard on the desktop, seemed to work, copied netetup.exe to usb stick, put on laptop and finished install. The problem is nothing appears under network places and no other computer appears in my workgroup. Both computers are in same workgroup, named WORKGROUP.
Please help, I am new to networking and cant figure this out. Thanks
On mine, you just plug your desktop into the hub/switch on the back of the router, for wireless you should have to configure it to shoot a signal, and it should do that. On my setup, I have the same setup your talking about, and my 2 computers cannot see each other, but both can access the net. My assumption/guess is that if you want them to see each other and share files you will need them both to be wired or wireless. If you do wireless, I suggest WPA or WPA 2 for security.
The connection type (wired or wireless) doesn't matter since the computer communication via TCP/IP. For computers to "see each other" they must be on the same subnet, be in the same workgroup, have their IP addresses trusted if there is firewall software and either a folder or a printer shared.
