Window XP beep problems

We are sharing Windows XP with VxWorks on the same processor. Windows basically runs as an idle task under vxWorks. The vxWorks side runs a task that sounds a beep on the system board speaker.
This worked fine until we changed hardware platform to a Dell Latitude E6500. Now the beep only works if we generate a beep on the Windows side due to opening a Windows Explorer window and then the
vxworks beep sounds for one minute and then stops until another Windows event triggers a beep.

Anyone know what's happening here?
