Is there a device available which will enable me to reduce the level
of music and background noises so as to make the dialogue more
understandable? I need something that can be placed in the signal path
to an audio amplifier or headphones.

Don't think so. The movie or show is shot AS IS. You might be able to
separate or enhance sounds if you D/L to a computer. Be a lot of work
though.

Just use the center channel of any Dolby Pro Logic processor.

I had this same problem with my new Sanyo HDTV (HT32744) mostly when
watching DVDs but also with some TV movies. I found that turning OFF the
TV's surround sound made a big difference. Now I can here the voices
much better.

Paul, If you are using a reciever for audio, then look in the manual
for an adjustment. On my JVC RX-8020V I made the voice clearer
sounding. On a scale of 1 to 5 I made it 5 and now get much improved
voice. (These 67 year old ears need all the help they can.) BTW, this
reciever allows volume adjustment on each speaker. The center channel
has the most voice so I have that at +1.

Had the same prob with my in built plasma speakers when watching dvd's
the only solution is to channel the sound thru a a/v receiver and stand
alone speakers
